Project Objectives

Scientists from AAFC-Saskatoon, AAFC-London, AAFC-Ottawa and from NRC-Saskatoon are focusing on seed development and composition in Brassica species and Arabidopsis. The scientific objectives of the project are as follows:

Seed development

  • Functional Genomics of seed early stages development (R. Datla, W. Keller, D. Palmer and F. Georges)

  • Functional Genomics of seed maturation and germination stages (A. Cutler and E. Tsang)

  • Functional Genomics of microspore-derived embryos (J. Krochko and A. Ferrie)

  • Functional Genomics of seed coat development (G. Selvaraj)

  • The role of LEA genes in late seed development and desiccation. (J. Singh and S. Abrams)

  • Metabolic profiling of plant hormones of Brassica seed and embryo (S. Abrams)

Seed composition

  • Characterization of genes involved in starch biosynthesis (J. Zou)

  • Study of genes involved in lipid biosynthesis using Arabidopsis mutants (D. Taylor and D. Palmer)

  • Regulation of storage protein Genes in Arabidopsis and Brassica using GFP proteins (Y. Cui and E. Tsang)

  • Characterization of dehydrin, cruciferin and napin gene families in Arabidopsis and Brassica (D. Lydiate and A. Sharpe)

  • Study of seed storage protein gene expression using epitope-tagged proteins (D. Hegedus and K. Rozwadowski)

  • Identification of phenylpropanoid and phytate genes in mutant lines of Arabidopsis (A. Hannoufa)

  • Seed metabolic profiling using the Synchrotron (M. Reaney)

  • Generation of Arabidopsis homozygous lines and end sequencing DNA insertions from homozygous lines (I. Parkin and D. Lydiate)

  • Fingerprinting of B. napus BAC clones (I. Parkin)
