Expected outcomes

This project will lead to scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, it is expected that new intellectual property will be generated through the patenting of novel genes. The research results of this project may also lead to new seeds varieties. For example potential products are canola seeds that will mature more rapidly and will likely be more tolerant to frost damage. An other example would be seeds with a reduced seed coat thickness that will be more amenable to processing for food or feed.

With respect to seed composition research, new varieties that will accumulate novel or improved proteins or lipids or carbohydrate at high levels may be generated. Genetic markers will be developed to select new varieties of canola with high protein. Varieties of canola with a reduced level of anti-nutritional compounds that can make canola an ideal feed for animals could be developed. Some of the potential products could be ideally suited to high-value niche markets.

Through international conferences, seminars and local meeting, scientists involved in this project will meet with other national and international scientist and possibly collaborate on new projects.

In addition to the principal investigators and support staff, forty scientist including post-doctoral fellow, technician and students are working on this project. Several scientists are recent graduates and will have the opportunity to be trained in the field of genomics.

The overall activities of this project and expected outcomes will reinforce Canada&squor;s strong position in crop genomics and will permit the application of new discoveries to agricultural production and industries in Canada.
